Estimate of genetic parameters for carcass traits and visual scores inmeat sheep using Bayesian inference via threshold and linear models

Abstract: The aim of this study was to estimate the variance components and genetic parameters for marbling in the ribeye area (MRA) and body condition score (BCS) using Bayesian inference via mixed linear and threshold animal models. Data were obtained from Santa Ines breed sheep reared in the Brazilian Mid-North region. Analyses considering the Monte Carlo methods were performed with Markov chains from 500000 cycles onward. A 200000-cycle initial burn-in was considered with values taken at every 250 cycles, in a total… Show more

“…Examples of low heritability have been found for the traits of plasma urea concentration, used as an indicator of nitrogen utilization and excretion ( 62 ), and the number of eggs per gram of feces (a worm-resistance trait) ( 63 , 64 ). Nevertheless, medium to high heritability was identified in carcass characteristics, fatty acid profile ( 60 , 65 ), growth ( 66 , 67 ), worm resistance, and FAMACHA grade ( 63 , 67 ).…”

“…The genes controlling LSB in any parity may differ from another; therefore, each parity must be treated as a different trait (Noguera et al,2003;Roeche et al,1995). The Bayesian approach via the Gibbs sampling has been used to estimate genetic parameters of LSB and birth weight, body weight, and LSB, carcass traits and visual scores, survival, body condition score, wool shedding, worm resistance, wool and growth traits, and daily gain traits in some populations of sheep (Latifi et al, 2017;Yadollahi et al, 2019;Yazdi et al,1999;Ghavi Hossein-Zadeh., 2010;Júnior et al, 2017;King et al, 2006;Alves et al, 2016;Vargas Jurado et al,2016;Ciappesoni et al, 2013;Gowane et al, 2015).…”
