Omega 3 Fatty Acids Reduce the Triglyceride Levels in Rats with Apical Periodontitis

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the prophylactic and therapeutic supplementation with omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (w-3 PUFAs) on the lipid profile and periapical bone resorption in rats with apical periodontitis. Forty male rats were divided into groups: control rats (C), rats treated with w-3 PUFAs (C+O), rats with pulp exposure-induced apical periodontitis (AP), and rats with AP treated with w-3 PUFAs (AP+O). The administration of w-3 PUFAs was carried out orally once a day for… Show more

“…A recent study by Azuma et al . studied the influence of omega‐3 fatty acids on serum triglyceride levels in rats with AP. Their findings showed that omega‐3 fatty acids reduce the triglyceride levels that have already been altered by AP.…”

“…We also found that high n-3 PUFA and low n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio diet reduced TC and TG contents. These results were consistent with the previous findings that n-3 PUFA could help to reduce TG and TC contents [23,24]. These data suggest that high n-3 PUFA and low n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio diets could help us to produce pork meat with low TC and TG contents.…”

“…FOs rich in n-3 FAs are known to reduce serum TG [45]. Such an effect was demonstrated under both SD and HFD conditions [42] but also under various other conditions: administration of 3 g/kg/day FO for 3 months decreased fasting plasma TG by 39% in a diabetes mellitus model [46]; after only 8 days of n-3 PUFA administration, serum and hepatic TG content decreased in rats treated with 0.5 mg/kg/day dexamethasone for 15 days but did not reach the control level [47], and a similar effect of dietary n-3 PUFAs was shown in rats with apical periodontitis, a condition in which serum TG is higher than in controls, but not in normal rats [48]. However, in the last-mentioned study, although the period of n-3 PUFA administration was similar to that in the present research, a 20% lower dose was used.…”
