Influence of Thermal Cycles Number on Bond Strength of Metallic Brackets to Ceramic

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different number of thermal cycles on the shear bond strength (SBS) of metallic orthodontic brackets bonded to feldspathic ceramic by a composite resin. Twenty-five ceramic cylinders were etched with 10% hydrofluoric acid for 60 s and received two layers of silane. Brackets were bonded to the cylinders using Transbond XT and assigned to 5 groups (n=5): Group 1 -Control group (without thermal cycling); Group 2 -500 thermal cycles; Group 3 -5,000 thermal cycles… Show more

“…Wattanawongpitak et al examined the effect of thermal stress (0; 500; and 5,000 cycles) on resin composites, finding that marginal and cavity gap numbers depended on the number of cycles [15]. Jurubeba et al reported that the bond strength of orthodontic adhesives was affected after >7,000 thermal cycles [16]. In this study, Knoop hardness values did not change between 1,000 and 10,000 cycles.…”

“…Some factors as thermal cycling, silane application, fatigue, and artificial ageing may compromise the durability of the bond strength between orthodontic brackets and ceramic surface using bonding materials (2,10,11,23). The quality of the bond is determined by the specific treatment bonding used to improve bonding mechanisms between bracket-bonding materials (1).…”

“…Clinically, when the orthodontic brackets bonded on the ceramic are exposed to the oral environment failure can occur due to exposed to thermal, physical and chemical changes in the oral cavity during the orthodontic use (1). Thermal cycling is an alternative method to induce stress and regimens between 500 and 7,000 cycles have been used to understand the mechanisms that can cause deterioration and reduction in strength in the oral conditions before the mechanical tests (1,(9)(10)(11). The difference in the thermal expansion coefficients between different bonding materials can increase the stress and cause adhesion failure due to temperature variations (12).…”

“…Los cuerpos de prueba fueron sometidos a la termociclación, donde los mismos pasaron por 500 ciclos térmicos con variaciones de temperatura entre 5 °C a 55 °C (ISO, 2015) (Caroline, 2015), y el tiempo de transferencia de 10 segundos entre los banos en agua desionizada (Trites et al, 2004;Yuasa et al, 2010;Jurubeba et al, 2017).…”
