Obstructive sleep apnea: acute effects of CPAP on polyssonographic variables

Abstract: Introduction The use of non-invasive ventilation in the form of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is among the main therapeutic options for patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Yet the effects of CPAP obtained on the first night of use are underreported. Objective To evaluate the acute effects of CPAP on polysomnographic variables in patients with OSA. Materials and methods This study is a case series with 31 patients (55.8 ± 11.4 years; 22 men) in the initial phase of CPAP treatment. The… Show more

“…After analyzing the data, OSAS is classified according to the number of respiratory events and the apnea--hypopnea index (AHI): it is considered mild when 5 to 15 events/hour are recorded; moderate is 15 to 30 events/hour; and severe is a mean of ≥ 30 events/hour. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11] Individuals may have distinct symptoms, namely excessive daytime sleepiness, depressive states, impaired memory and learning abilities, poor concentration and attention span, and cardiovascular diseases, which can culminate in sudden death. OSAS is a progressive chronic disease that directly influences quality of life, given that sleep is a brain function that is essential to life and aids in relieving human stress.…”

“…Quando acompanhada a aplicação do CPAP, logo na primeira noite de sua utilização, promove um maior equilíbrio entre as fases e melhora a qualidade do sono de pacientes com SAOS [18]. O CPAP mostrou ter efeitos positivos em pacientes com SAOS e hipertensão persistente, na metanálise de seis ensaios clínicos, incluídos de maneira aleatória, para avaliar sua eficácia [4].…”
