Abstract: Background: Sarcopenia is prevalent before liver transplantation, and it is considered to be a risk factor for morbidity/mortality. After liver transplantation, some authors suggest that sarcopenia remains, and as patients gain weight as fat, they reach sarcopenic obesity status. Aim: Prospectively to assess changes in body composition, prevalence and associated factors with respect to sarcopenia, obesity and sarcopenic obesity after transplantation. Methods: Patients were evaluated at two different times fo… Show more

“…Of the patients re-transplanted via HAT, 40% died, showing that in transplants recipients with thrombosis there was a higher rate, with a 559% increase in mortality. Liver transplantation is also associated with the emergence of sarcopenic obesity; however, similarly to the study by Anastácio et al 2 this relationship was not observed in our study.…”

“…Several studies referring to new survival foretellers are being developed to help on the decision making process of liver transplantion 11 - 13 , 19 , 24 . However, up to now the big centres use and recognize only the foreteller MELD as clinically useful, northing all of the allocation process of the grafts.…”

“…First of all, liver transplantation is not just one moment in a woman’s life – it is a process – and obesity and metabolic syndrome in liver transplant recipients have multifactorial etiologies [ 7 , 17 19 ]. The role of the basic disease leading to liver transplantation can have a significant impact—patients transplanted because of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis had higher risk of death from cardiovascular episodes than patients requiring liver transplantations because of other reasons [ 8 ].…”

“…Pre-pregnancy BMI and gestational weight gain may be influenced by many factors, including parity, obesogenic environment, smoking, drugs, socioeconomic status, and accompanying diseases [ 6 ]. Patients undergoing liver transplantation are at greater risk of developing obesity than non-transplanted patients due to chronic disease, leading to transplantation problems, metabolic changes, immunosuppressive therapy, and other factors [ 7 , 8 ].…”
