This study aimed to investigate the regeneration of epithelial cells in the long-term observation of ureter reconstruction by excising the demucosalized ileum. First, 8Beagle dogs were anesthetized and the abdominal cavity was inspected for abnormalities via an abdominal incision. The right kidney and ureter were subsequently separated, and the ureter was severed from its connection to the renal pelvis and bladder and ligated distally. The 10-15 cm of ileum was used to reconstruct the ureter. The biopsies of the proximal, middle, and distal reconstructed ureter (neoureter) were collected at the first, third, fifth, and sixth month postoperatively. The regeneration of ileal mucosa at the first, third, fifth, and sixth month was observed by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and immunofluorescence staining cytokeratin 18 (CK18). HE staining results showed irregular cytoarchitecture, severe nuclear consolidation, and inflammatory infiltration in the proximal, middle, and distal neo-ureters of dogs at the first month after ureteral reconstruction. With longer follow-up, the injuries of the proximal, middle, and distal neo-ureters were alleviated at the third, fifth, and sixth month after surgery. The expression of CK18 was higher in the middle neo-ureters than that in the proximal and distal neo-ureters at different time points after ureteral reconstruction and decreased with time. In summary, the present study demonstrated that demucosalized ileum was feasible for ureteral reconstructive surgery with satisfying prognostic effects. Bulbus Lilii, as a medicinal and edible plant, has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and immunopotentiating pharmacological activities, which seems to be therapeutic on cancer prevention. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of total saponins from Lilium lancifolium (TSLL) on proliferation, apoptosis and migration of human gastric carcinoma cells lines SGC-7901 and HGC-27 and its underlying mechanism. The results showed that TSLL inhibited the proliferation of gastric carcinoma cells by suppressing the level of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and increased p21 level. TSLL induced cells apoptosis by up-regulating expression of pro-apoptotic protein Bax and down-regulating anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 expression. Meanwhile, TSLL remarkably inhibited cell migration and invasion, decreased matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) expression and increased tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) expression. Notably, TSLL had stronger anti-cancer effect on undifferentiated HGC-27 cells than differentiated SGC-7901 cells. Accordingly, TSLL might be a promising candidate to prevent and suppress the growth of gastric carcinoma cells.

Background: Since the publication of the first Brazilian Consensus on Gastric Cancer (GC) in 2012 carried out by the Brazilian Gastric Cancer Association, new concepts on diagnosis, staging, treatment and follow-up have been incorporated. Aim: This new consensus is to promote an update to professionals working in the fight against GC and to provide guidelines for the management of patients with this condition. Methods: Fifty-nine experts answered 67 statements regarding the diagnosis, staging, treatment and prognosis of GC with five possible alternatives: 1) fully agree; 2) partially agree; 3) undecided; 4) disagree and 5) strongly disagree A consensus was adopted when at least 80% of the sum of the answers “fully agree” and “partially agree” was reached. This article presents only the responses of the participating experts. Comments on each statement, as well as a literature review, will be presented in future publications. Results: Of the 67 statements, there was consensus in 50 (74%). In 10 declarations, there was 100% agreement. Conclusion: The gastric cancer treatment has evolved considerably in recent years. This consensus gathers consolidated principles in the last decades, new knowledge acquired recently, as well as promising perspectives on the management of this disease.
