Complications Related to Gastric Bypass Performed With Different Gastrojejunal Diameters

Abstract: Background: Among the options for surgical treatment of obesity, the most widely used has been the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The gastrojejunal anastomosis can be accomplished in two ways: handsewn or using circular and linear stapled. The complications can be divided in early and late. Aim:To compare the incidence of early complications related with the handsewn gastrojejunal anastomosis in gastric bypass using Fouchet catheter with different diameters. Method: The records of 732 consecutive patients who had u… Show more

“…However, it is still done at our center for complications like bleeding ulcers. The most common complication following GJ is stenosis, followed by marginal ulcers and perforation [3]. Gastric remnant cancer (GRC) is the gastric carcinoma that develops in the remnant stomach more than five years after distal gastrectomy for benign disease [4][5][6][7].…”

“…The assumption was based on a combination of two different factors. First, most surgeons calibrate the stoma size using standardized Fouchet bougies or circular staplers [21,22]. Therefore, patients are discharged from surgery with small and standardized GJAs.…”

“…This is especially important in the anastomosis performed in obesity surgery (e.g. gastric bypass), since reflux of chyme or pancreatic juice can cause the procedure to fail [5,6,7].…”
