Abstract: Background: The criterion of Milan (CM) has been used as standard for indication of liver transplantation (LTx) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide for nearly 20 years. Several centers have adopted criteria expanded in order to increase the number of patients eligible to liver transplantation, while maintaining good survival rates. In Brazil, since 2006, the criterion of Milan/Brazil (CMB), which disregards nodules <2 cm, is adopted, including patients with a higher number of small nodules. Aim: To ev… Show more

“…The advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis are different among the various etiologies 17 , and this statement has been confirmed by the literature over the years, clearly demonstrated by pioneering study in late 1950’s with assessments based on analysis of 10,000 consecutive autopsies 4 , 12 . In our study, was compared the elastography values of patients without HCC in ethanol and HCV etiology, and was observed the double values obtained by FibroScan (p=0.022) with similar CHILD and MELD.…”

“…The MELD score was described to predict the three-month survival rate of patients submitted to transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt and validated as a measure of probability of mortality in patients candidates for liver transplantation 11 , 24 , 31 . Since then, it has been adopted as a criterion in the allocation of liver for transplantation until the present day.…”

“…The first liver transplantation in humans was done in the 60s by Thomas Starzl. Since that time to the current days several landmarks have been conquered improving surgical technique, ameliorating grafts preservation during transportation, controlling cellular rejection, and preventing infections on post-transplantation period 19 , 20 , 22 .…”
