et al.

Abstract: This study compared the distribution of stunting and height-for-age (HAZ) Z-scores among age groups in data from the Brazilian National Survey on Demography and Health of Women and Children (PNDS 2006) and the Brazilian National Survey on Child Nutrition (ENANI-2019). The final sample comprised 4,408 and 14,553 children < 59 months of age in the PNDS 2006 and ENANI-2019, respectively. Children with HAZ scores < -2 according to the World Health Organization (WHO) growth standard were classified as stunted… Show more

“…This indicator stability seems to result from a better growth profile among children ≥ 24 months of age combined with a worse profile among those 0-23 months of age. For children < 24 months of age, higher mean HAZ was observed in 2006 rather than in 2019, while the opposite was observed for those ≥ 24 months of age 32 .…”

“…The most effective measures to overcome stunting are: increasing the purchasing power of the poorest and universalizing the population’s access to essential education, health, and sanitation services 53 . As mentioned, evidence indicates that the stability observed for this indicator relies on the combination of a better nutritional status among older children and a worse status among younger children 32 . If younger children’s growth profile is maintained, there may be an increase in stunting prevalence in the near future.…”

“…The prevalence of stunting and underweight in children decreased significantly in Brazil from 1974 to 2006, and the prevalence of overweight in children < 5 years old remained constant 36 . However, from 2006 to 2019, the prevalence of overweight and wasting increased, and stunting was stable in Brazilian children under 5 years old, but when considering the < 1-year-old group, the prevalence increased from 4.9% to 9% 15 , 37 , 38 .…”
