Objective To evaluate the factors associated with abortion complications following the implementation of the good-practice surveillance network Mujeres en Situación de Aborto (Women Undergoing Abortion, MUSA, in Spanish). Methods A cross-sectional study with women who underwent abortion due to any cause and in any age group at UNICAMP Women's Hospital (part of MUSA network), Campinas, Brazil, between July 2017 and Agust 2019. The dependent variable was the presence of any abortion-related complications during hospitalization. The independent variables were clinical and sociodemographic data. The Chi-square test, the Mann–Whitney test, and multiple logistic regression were used for the statistical analysis. Results Overall, 305 women were enrolled (mean ± standard deviation [SD] for age: 29.79 ± 7.54 years). The mean gestational age was 11.17 (±3.63) weeks. Accidental pregnancy occurred in 196 (64.5%) cases, 91 (29.8%) due to contraception failure. At least 1 complication was observed in 23 (7.54%) women, and 8 (34.8%) of them had more than 1. The most frequent complications were excessive bleeding and infection. The factors independently associated with a higher prevalence of complications were higher gestational ages (odds ratio [OR]: 1.22; 95% confidence interval [95%CI]: 1.09 to 1.37) and contraceptive failure (OR: 3.4; 95%CI: 1.32 to 8.71). Conclusion Higher gestational age and contraceptive failure were associated with a higher prevalence of complications. This information obtained through the surveillance network can be used to improve care, particularly in women more susceptible to unfavorable outcomes.

As meninas têm sido vítimas de violência, especialmente as sexuais. A infância pode ser violada de várias maneiras, como o caso ocorrido no Brasil, em 2020. As pesquisas qualitativas podem elucidar o fenômeno por possibilitar aprofundar as questões complexas ligadas à violência sexual contra meninas que resultam em gravidez e aborto legal. Objetivos: Evidenciar o percurso investigativo qualitativo utilizado para decodificar o caso da menina vítima de estupro perpetrado por um familiar, que resultou em gravidez, e cujo desfecho legal foi o aborto. Métodos: Estudo documental de abordagem qualitativa. As fontes de dados foram dois jornais brasileiros no formato eletrônico. O período da coleta de dados foi de agosto a outubro de 2020. Para tanto, foi utilizado um roteiro semiestruturado. Foram incluídas reportagens sobre o tema de estudo e excluídas as que apenas citavam o caso, sem explorar seus desencadeamentos. Para a análise de conteúdo temática foi utilizado o software webQDA. As categorias analíticas foram gênero e geração. Resultados: Submetidas à análise, as 78 reportagens selecionadas evidenciaram três categorias empíricas: a subalternidade escancarada; o processo para concretização do aborto; criminalização versus legalização do aborto. A metodologia qualitativa apoiada pelo webQDA permitiu expor o que não se mostrou à primeira vista: a existência de profunda subalternidade de gênero e de geração, quando a protagonista, a menina, sofreu diferentes novas violênciasas institucionaisque contradizem o que o Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente determina. Conclusões: O percurso metodológico adotado permitiu olhar para além da própria situação vivenciada pela meninaestupro, gravidez e aborto -antes de completar 12 anos de idade. Sobressaiu a manipulação de líderes e autoridades impondo suas convicções pessoais, ao invés da garantia dos direitos da vítima.

This article discusses political setbacks related to sexual and reproductive health and rights that have occurred in Brazil in the last 5 years (2014–2018) resulting from the significant role played by Christian (Evangelical and Catholic) parliamentarians in the legislative branch. Political initiatives aimed at prohibiting the affirmation of sexual and reproductive rights, while also curtailing debate about sexuality and gender in schools and universities, have raised “moral panic” within some elements of Brazilian society. The discursive strategies used around so-called “gender ideology” stimulated the formation of civil organisations which promote morality based on right-wing political positions. For this study, we looked at official documents and bibliographic material to examine how issues related to abortion rights, health care in cases of sexual violence, the prevention of sexually transmitted infections and homosexual citizenship are currently being suppressed, compromising the defence and advancement of the sexual and reproductive rights of women and the LGBTI+ population. The results point to the steady weakening of public policies that had become law in the 1980s, a time of Brazilian re-democratisation after two decades of military dictatorship. A wide range of civil, political and social rights, which saw significant growth and consolidation over the last 20 years, were rolled back after the resurgence of the extreme right wing in the federal legislature, culminating in the election of the current president in October 2018. However, social movements have increased in strength in the last few decades, especially the black feminist and LGBTI+ rights movements. These movements continue to provide political resistance, striving to affirm and protect all sexual and reproductive rights achieved to date.
