“…In a context of rapid dissemination of disinformation and growing hostility against science and the press, the predominance of journalistic portals and websites (30) among those classified as 'professional' is important. Our previous research on public debate about scientific topics on social networks, such as vaccines [Massarani, Leal and Waltz, 2020], also pointed to a significant share of journalistic content among those with most interactions.…”

“…In this sense, it is imperative to highlight that, in our corpus, there were no institutional websites linked to institutions in the scientific and health fields, such as universities, research centres and agencies for the promotion of research. In previous work on the public debate about vaccines on social networks, these websites already had a low presence [Massarani, Leal and Waltz, 2020]. It seems that websites directly related to the areas of S&T do not appear among the sources that guided the public debate of higher engagement about COVID-19 on social networks.…”

“…This is because the titles are essentially brief elements that need to attract the reader's attention (Condit et al, 2001). In addition, it is worth remembering that newspapers are inserted in social media platforms and the sharing of their news often occurs only from the title (Massarani et al, 2020). Condit et al (2001) showed that access to the content of a text is essential for the reader to adjust the interpretation of misleading information in the title.…”

“…A review study by Puri et al (2020) found that, in general, research has shown that anti-vaccine content often generates greater user engagement on social media. However, when analyzing the 100 most engaged hyperlinks between 2018 and 2019, Massarani et al (2020) observed greater interest of Brazilians in favor of the vaccine but with the limited presence of content produced by academic and scientific institutions. In addition, among the hyperlinks to texts with positions contrary to the vaccine, most contained false information.…”

“…A Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, por exemplo, produziu uma análise exploratória em que constatou 13,5% de engajamento nos links mais compartilhados do Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest e Reddit acerca de fake news sobre vacinas. Por outro lado, a mesma pesquisa mostra que a preocupação com a veracidade gera mais engajamento quando se recorre, para ficarmos apenas em uma ferramenta recente nesses tempos de pós-verdade, às agências de fact checking (checagem de fatos) 8 .…”
