Abstract: This study aimed to assess the environmental and social vulnerability and identify critical highway stretches for accidents involving transportation of hazardous products on the BR-101 highway between the cities of Osório and Torres in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The study's approach consisted of a multiple-criteria analysis combining highway safety analysis and environmental and social vulnerability analysis in the occurrence of accidents with hazardous products, plus cartographic analysis techniques. “…In this study, the time of service in the prehospital care was higher for the GTA occurring in the rural area (Soares et al, 2018), justifying such a significant association, since the base of the services that provide prehospital care of the analyzed region is located in the urban zone. In addition, the rural area has different characteristics in relation to the victim's exposure to the event, being conducive to risk behavior by the driver, such as not using protective equipment, driving without a national driver's license, use of alcoholic beverages, and insufficient traffic control in those localities (Denti et al, 2017;Tinoco et al, 2016).…”

“…The risk associated to the transport of a dangerous product depends not only on the substance being transported but also on the road network characteristics, weather conditions, driver skills and population concentration along the selected routes [ 2 ]. The potential impacts of accidents related to road transport of hazardous products were discussed in various studies, which triggered social concerns and were helpful as guides to the conception and implementation of adequate corrective and preventive actions [ 3 ]. However, before implementation of any specific measure, a correct diagnosis on vulnerability and risk is required.…”

“…Tinoco et al (2016) em um estudo realizado no trecho da BR 101, que liga as cidades de Torres e Osório no Rio Grande do Sul, mapeou as vulnerabilidades do trecho, em relação aos transportes dos produtos perigosos e seus riscos socioambientais, Como resultado, apresentou uma ferramenta no qual auxilia a tomada de decisões e operações, além de indicar novas pesquisas para estudos, colaborando com medidas preventivas para a gestão de riscos.…”
