Adverse events in the intensive care unit: impact on mortality and length of stay in a prospective study

Abstract: This study sought to evaluate the occurrence of adverse events and their impacts on length of stay and mortality in an intensive care unit (ICU). This is a prospective study carried out in a teaching hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The cohort included 355 patients over 18 years of age admitted to the ICU between August 1, 2011 and July 31, 2012. The process we used to identify adverse events was adapted from the method proposed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. We used a logistical regression to… Show more

“…A study assessing AE in an ICU also showed a predominance of older patients, (10) although other studies showed different results with a median age under 65 years. (3,7) Other studies found higher age mean and longer hospital stays for the patients who had an AE, compared to those who did not. (11) Most patients admitted came from Emergency Care for clinical reasons, which is in agreement with other studies, (11) pointing out the importance of having units prepared for the admission of serious patients in hospitals.…”

“…Therefore, the outcomes of AE may lead to increased mortality and longer hospital stays. (3) Strategies to evaluate and monitor patients have been adopted in order to assure the quality of care and even reduce the incidence of undesirable events. (4) In ICUs different scales are used to measure clinical and prognostic parameters and the demand for care.…”

“…Research has observed that these same events prolonged hospitalization time, on average, in 19 days, and increased mortality. 16 In another study, this time was even longer, 31 days.…”

“…15 Another study found a lower value, about 32.4% of the patients suffered some AE. 16 AEs interfere with patient integrity, resulting in increased morbidity, mortality, treatment time and hospital costs. The male young adult male was the most incident profile.…”

“…The need for ICU admission stems from hemodynamic instabilities that require intensive care, including the monitoring and continuous administration of medications 2 . In this environment, patients have a weakened health status with a risk of death, and integrated care from the entire team is required because these patients are usually unconscious due to ventilatory support or their existing health condition.…”
