Abstract: Sampling strategies such as respondent-driven sampling (RDS) and time-location sampling (TLS) offer unique opportunities to access key populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women. Limited work has assessed implementation challenges of these methods. Overcoming implementation challenges can improve research quality and increase uptake of HIV services among key populations. Drawing from studies using RDS in Brazil and TLS in Peru, we summarize challenges encountered in the field and… Show more

“…For example, in Brazil, the terms 'transvestite' and 'transsexual' are commonly used by the communities themselves and though fluid and dependent on context, 'transvestite' can relay differing degrees of presentation as a woman whereas 'transsexual' can relay different degrees of transitioning. [38][39][40] Again, the participation of transgender individuals in the research process is critical, 37 and only in so doing will research be capable of addressing how the risk of HIV and STIs differs or is the same across different gender identities and anatomical configurations.…”

“…Mesmo assim não foi possível atingir o total da amostra planejada, o que pode ter reduzido o poder do estudo para identificar algumas variáveis importantes. Cabe salientar que os HSH são considerados uma população de difícil acesso, como já descrito em pesquisas anteriores 15,43,44 . Soma-se a isso o fato de termos selecionado os voluntários entre aqueles que frequentam locais específicos, como ONGs e uma ESF voltada à população HSH e trans.…”

“…We considered the community context and Ministry of Health system during the intervention to ensure continuity and compromise with health services; the approach must consider the different vulnerable populations and set the proper link to care for individuals according to their profile [26,27,32,33].…”

“…Research indicate that women are the last to have access to health services in the community, given that they prioritize the attention to their partners and children. The link to care plays an essential role in integrating women into the health system [33,34,39,40].…”
