Abstract: Background: Ayahuasca is a psychoactive ethnobotanical concoction that has been used for decades by indigenous groups of the Northwestern Amazon and by syncretic religious organizations for ritual and therapeutic purposes. In the last two decades, it is being used worldwide in evolving practices. Ayahuasca seem to therapeutic effects, but controlled studies are lacking. Moreover, its safety and toxicity are not completely understood. Objectives: To present an overview of the effects of ayahuasca based on the m… Show more

“…While most relevant signs of toxicity were found upon high, non-ceremonial-based doses, one study found alterations in aorta parameters upon acute and repeated doses comparable to ceremonial-based doses (Pitol et al, 2015). Evidence from clinical settings and with long-term ayahuasca drinkers indicate no physiological risk from ayahuasca use (Kohek et al, 2022;Ona et al, 2019); however, studies investigating ayahuasca's long-term effects on cardiac parameters or specific clinical (e.g., cardiac) population are still few and lack rigorous controls (Barbosa et al, 2012;dos Santos et al, 2017a). Therefore, more controlled studies addressing ayahuasca safety on cardiac parameters or cardiac populations would make a timely contribution to the field.…”

“…It is important to emphasise that various studies have extensively described acute ayahuasca safety in humans, including studies with healthy and clinical populations (Barbosa et al, 2012;dos Santos et al, 2017a). Experimental studies in humans indicate that acute physiological effects of ayahuasca include moderate and transient physiological responses such as increases in blood pressure and heart rate; physiological adverse effects, such as nausea and vomiting, are considered to be mild (dos Santos et al, 2017a;Durante et al, 2020;Riba et al, 2001;Riba et al, 2003).…”
