Cocoa propagation, technologies for production of seedlings

Abstract: The vegetative propagation in cacao has been used in Central America since the beginning of the last century. However, only from the end of the century this technique has been intensified in the state of Bahia, where vegetative propagation changes have increased the yield of cocoa growing areas, especially those using other technologies associated with clonal seedlings. The use of clonal garden to collect stems in nursery can reduce by 80% the space required for maintenance of stock plants. On the other hand, … Show more

“…These may be more appropriately suited to their villages' specific conditions and more appealing to local demands (Contreras-Díaz et al, 2017). Grafting is the standard practice for the renewal of elder cacao trees whose productivity started decreasing, but properly doing such procedure usually requires direct learning from technical assistants since a graft failure may compromise the tree itself (Sodré & Gomes, 2019). On the other hand, the adoption of irrigation implies that the water requirements are adequately covered and that the crop is highly likely to avoid ponding risks.…”

“…PH-16 cacao has a high nutritional demand similar to other hybrids generated from crossing with Trinitarian plants [25]. PH-16 cacao shows a versatile adaptability to different climatic conditions, being found in commercial crops from humid to semi-arid zones [23,26]. This clonal variety displayed good production responses in semi-mechanized systems with chemical weeding control, sprayed pesticides and pruning, as well as the use of windbreaks and drip irrigation [26].…”

This clonal variety displayed good production responses in semi-mechanized systems with chemical weeding control, sprayed pesticides and pruning, as well as the use of windbreaks and drip irrigation [26]. Several attributes of cacao quality were analysed in samples from the PH-16 clone, including the total amount of free amino acids [1].…”

“…This working very difficult than other methods applied in dicotyledoneae plant. Sodré and Gomes (2019) state that plant buds as main source of mass plant is limiting number, different quality and very susceptible to environment. These technique need more skills and maintenance in field.…”
