Citrus species grown in temperate zones have sprouting inhibited in winter and this is retaken in spring when they also bloom. The main factor that defines the vegetative or reproductive destiny of the buds is the presence of fruits in development. Low winter temperatures slow plant metabolism, which has been reported as necessary for the expression of the reproductive program. During the winter period of the annual cycle, osmotically active compounds such as proline are increased as part of the cold tolerance response. We investigated whether the presence of developing fruit and the application of exogenous gibberellins affect the proline level in citrus leaves. In an orchard of adult ‘Montenegrina’ mandarin trees, leaf proline contents were measured over two rest periods for branches with or without fruits. Branches that bloomed, the ones that did not have developing fruits, had higher proline levels as well as higher proline: chlorophyll and proline: total amino acid ratios than did branches with fruits. However, the application of exogenous gibberellins, which reduced flowering, did not affect proline content during the same periods. We discuss the ways in which proline may be involved in floral induction in citrus.

Citrus reticulata Blanco is a moderately-sized fruit tree widely used as herbal medicine worldwide. The nutritional composition, medicinal uses, phytochemistry and pharmacological properties of C. reticulata were critically reviewed in the current study. The literature linked to C. reticulata properties was obtained from multiple internet sources including Elsevier, Google Scholar, SciFinder, Web of Science, Pubmed, BMC, Science Direct, and Scopus. Ethnopharmacological research identified antioxidants such as vitamin C, carotenoids and phenolic compounds, also a source of sugars, organic acids, amino acids, pectins, minerals and volatile organic compounds as components of C. reticulata. As a medicinal plant, C. reticulata is used for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastro-intestinal distension, cough with profuse phlegm, hiccup and vomiting. The crude extracts of C. reticulata fruits have depicted anti-inflammatory, anticholesterolemic, analgesic, antiasthmatic, antiscorbutic, antiseptic, antitussive, carminative, expectorant, stomachic. With more people becoming nutrition-conscious, there has been an increase in the demand for the use of citrus fruits and their by-products as traditional medicines for conventional healthcare in developing countries.

The cultivar Sanguínea de Mombuca (Citrus sinensis [L.] Osbeck) bears lycopene-rich fruits with attractive red pulp and high nutritional value; thus, this cultivar has the potential to diversify orchards for the production of fruits for natural consumption and juice. Therefore, studies on the productive performance in combination with rootstocks are required. This study evaluated the phenological cycles, yield, ripening curve, and fruit quality of this cultivar grafted onto ‘Rangpur’ lime and ‘Swingle’ citrumelo. The study was conducted in the Midwest of the state of São Paulo, in the subtropical region of southeastern Brazil, and the field experiment was performed over two consecutive seasons. Rootstocks had little effect on the duration of the phenological cycles. The fruit ripening curve predicted the time of harvest as approximately 240 days after anthesis, regardless of rootstock. Fruits harvested from trees grafted onto ‘Swingle’ citrumelo showed higher levels of soluble solids and sugars and higher technological indices. The larger number of fruits and greater fresh weight confirmed that better yield performance occurred with the trees grafted onto the ‘Rangpur’ lime as opposed to the ‘Swingle’ citrumelo rootstock.
