Genetic diversity and antimicrobial resistance  in Streptococcus agalactiae strains recovered from female carriers in the Bucharest area

Abstract: For the first time, we used multilocus sequence typing (MLST) to understand how Romanian group B streptococcus (GBS) strains fit into the global GBS population structure. Colonising isolates recovered from adult human females were tested for antibiotic resistance, were molecularly serotyped based on the capsular polysaccharide synthesis (cps) gene cluster and further characterised using a set of molecular markers (surface protein genes, pilus-encoded islands and mobile genetic elements inserted in the scpB-lmb… Show more

“…Several of these markers appear together in CC19/17 isolates. Previously, CC19 (including ST01, ST17, ST19, and ST28) was found in neonatal sepsis cases from very diverse geographic origins (30,(46)(47)(48), and the CC19/17 cluster has also frequently been observed in invasive isolates (49,50).…”

“…So strains harboring mefA gene cannot develop MLSB or L phenotype [ 30 ]. These data highlighted that the erm family genes are the predominant determinants responsible for resistance to erythromycin among GBS isolates [ 31 , 32 ].…”

“…In the phylogenetic tree, isolates from the same ST were grouped together. The only two exceptions were strains HU-GS5823 (ST335) and H002 (ST736); though these STs were grouped in the ST19 cluster, they belong to the clonal cluster 19 (Usein et al, 2014;Chen et al, 2015;Emaneini et al, 2016).…”
