Abstract: Peri-urban infestations with triatomine bugs, their sources and their dynamics have rarely been investigated. Here, we corroborated the reported occurrence of Triatoma infestans in a peri-urban area and in neighbouring rural houses in Pampa del Indio, in the Argentine Chaco, and identified its putative sources using spatial analysis and demographic questionnaires. “…Several surveys genotyped T. cruzi parasites from Pampa del Indio sylvatic and domestic hosts, and vectors. Briefly, TcI was found in Didelphis albiventris opossums (Alvarado-Otegui et al, 2012), in the secondary vector Triatoma sordida (Macchiaverna et al, 2015;Maffey et al, 2012;Provecho et al, 2014), and rarely in domestic dogs and cats (Enriquez et al, 2014). TcIII was found in different armadillo species (Alvarado-Otegui et al, 2012;Orozco et al, 2013) and in two domestic dogs (Enriquez et al, 2013).…”

“…Ecological and socioeconomic factors associated with these urban transitions create conditions for the potential transmission of infectious diseases, which has been demonstrated for Chagas disease [ 1 , 2 ]. Vector-borne Trypanosoma cruzi transmission occurs in urban areas of South [ 2 7 ], Central [ 8 ] and North America [ 9 ]. Moreover, several urban outbreaks of acute Chagas disease related to the ingestion of contaminated food were recently described [ 10 14 ].…”
