Abstract: This study aimed to correlate the presence of ica genes, biofilm formation and antimicrobial resistance in 107 strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis isolated from blood cultures. The isolates were analysed to determine their methicillin resistance, staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) type, ica genes and biofilm formation and the vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was measured for isolates and subpopulations growing on vancomycin screen agar. The mecA gene was detected in 81.3% of the… Show more

“…Early impure VAN preparations (called ‘Mississippi mud’) induces higher nephrotoxicity, while purified VAN nephrotoxicity is rare56. However, VAN resistance with consequent treatment failure is progressively increased in staphylococci7. Therefore, one guideline suggested a dose of 15–20 mg/ml VAN.…”

“…Staphylococci are normally present in the environment and on human skin. Staphylococcus epidermidis is a member of the coagulase-negative Staphylococci group, and it is the predominant bacterial species on human skin and mucosa (Hellmark et al 2013;Pinheiro et al 2014). Based on the skin characteristics (e.g.…”

“…epidermidis must adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions (Rupp 2014). Staphylococcus epidermidis has also often been isolated from clinical and industrial environments (Chaieb et al 2007;Okee et al 2012;Hellmark et al 2013;Pinheiro et al 2014).…”

“…In the presence of anti- fbe antibody, adherence of S. epidermidis to fibrinogen was blocked and infection was attenuated in animal models (5, 6). The ica operon, includes icaA , icaB , icaC and icaD genes and encodes polysaccharide intercellular adhesin (PIA), a microbial surface component-recognizing adhesive matrix molecule (MSCRAMM) of S. epidermidis that affects biofilm formation and is crucial for bacterial adhesion (7). The IS256 is a mobile genetic element present in the genome of S. epidermidis at several copy numbers.…”
