Abstract: Patterns of malaria cases were compared between the department of Meta and the municipality of Puerto Gaitán, Colombia, to examine temporal change in malaria from 2005-2010. During this time frame in Meta the mean ratio was 2.53; in contrast, in Puerto Gaitán it was 1.41, meaning that a surprisingly high proportion of Plasmodium falciparum cases were reported from this municipality. A detailed analysis of data from Puerto Gaitán for 2009 and 2010 detected a significant difference (χ2, p < 0.001) in the distrib… Show more

“…Malaria rates tend to be lower in cities and towns compared with neighbouring rural settings, due to multiple factors such as improved housing and access to healthcare and limited availability of suitable vector-breeding habitats [2]. Nevertheless, malaria cases have been increasingly reported within and near urban centres across the Amazon Basin [3][4][5][6][7] and the Pacific Coast of South America [8][9][10][11][12][13].…”

“…Other focal studies such as the one conducted in Puerto Gaitán in the department of Meta located in the Eastern region of Colombia have reported similar results. In Puerto Gaitán 70 % of the 192 malaria cases reported in 2009 were from urban areas; whereas in 2010 malaria cases increased to 226 with only 46 % being urban [ 24 , 42 ].…”

“…Also Esmeraldas (San Lorenzo) in Northern Ecuador has confirmed peri-urban malaria transmission [ 21 ]. In Colombia, this problem is poorly understood, but previous studies have suggested the presence of urban and peri-urban malaria transmission foci of both P. vivax and P. falciparum in towns such as Quibdó, Buenaventura and Puerto Gaitán [ 22 24 ]. In all these countries peri-urban areas are characterized by rapid and anarchical urbanization induced mostly by population migration from rural endemic settings to areas with the presence of different Anopheline species.…”

“…During the last 10 years, a significant decrease in the malaria transmission rates has been observed in Colombia ( Buitrago et al 2013 , Chaparro et al 2013 , Forero et al 2014 ); simultaneously, however, reports on the presence of urban malaria transmission have surfaced. A total of 17 locations were recently reported as probable urban and peri-urban malaria transmission sites ( Padilla et al 2015 ).…”
