The rare enterovirus c99 and echovirus 29 strains in Brazil: potential risks associated to silent circulation

Abstract: Human enteroviruses (EVs) are associated with a wide spectrum of human diseases. Here we report the complete genome sequences of one EV-C99 strain and one E29 strain obtained from children suffering from acute gastroenteritis, without symptoms of enteroviral syndromes. This is the first report of EV-C99 in South America, and the second E29 genome described worldwide. Continuous surveillance on EVs is vital to provide further understanding of the circulation of new or rare EV serotypes in the country. The prese… Show more

“…In Brazil, the follow‐up of the CNS infections associated to EV is not mandatory, except for acute flaccid paralysis syndrome (post‐polio surveillance system) 102 . Therefore, the real burden of non‐polio EV infection is underestimated in the country 103,104 . It is imperative to establish an effective non‐polio EV surveillance system in Brazil to allow the EV identification and associate them (or not) with preventable conditions, inappropriate treatment, and containment measures 105…”

“…The samples described above were initially sent to the Public Health Laboratory of Tocantins (LACEN-TO) and stored at −20 °C, and the frozen faecal specimens were then taken to USP's Institute of Tropical Medicine (IMT/USP) to identify common enteric viruses, including RVAs, NoVs, HAstVs [32], and HSaVs [33], as well as rare [34][35][36] or potential new viruses [37][38][39][40][41][42], through NGS investigation.…”

“…In Brazil, a limited number of studies on EV that are associated with AGE have been reported [11,12]. These works were based on description only one specific type, hence, the epidemiological analysis of EV infection in AGE patients is restricted.…”
