Human sapovirus GI.2 and GI.3 from children with acute gastroenteritis in northern Brazil

Abstract: Human sapoviruses (HSaV) are considered important causative agents of acute gastroenteritis in humans worldwide. However, knowledge of the genetic characteristics of the whole genome of HSaV in Brazil is limited. Here we report the complete genome sequences of six HSaVs GI.2 and two GI.3 strains obtained from children with acute gastroenteritis in the Northern region of Brazil. Next generation sequencing was used to obtain the full genome and molecular characterization of the genome was performed. Phylogenetic… Show more

“…The samples described above were initially sent to the Public Health Laboratory of Tocantins (LACEN-TO) and stored at −20 °C, and the frozen faecal specimens were then taken to USP's Institute of Tropical Medicine (IMT/USP) to identify common enteric viruses, including RVAs, NoVs, HAstVs [32], and HSaVs [33], as well as rare [34][35][36] or potential new viruses [37][38][39][40][41][42], through NGS investigation.…”

“…It is important to point out that all patients were affected by acute diarrhea that later resolved after proper medication. A complete description of clinical data and the characterization of other viruses detected in these patients were described in previous studies [ 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. Although SqMV was detected in 51 individuals, full length genomes were recovered in 39 samples.…”

The samples were stored at −20 °C and forwarded to the USP Institute of Tropical Medicine of the University of São Paulo (IMT-USP) for identification of gastroenteric viruses (rotavirus, norovirus, human adenovirus, human astrovirus, human bocavirus, and human sapovirus) [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ].…”
