Characterisation of plasmid-mediated rmtB-1 in Enterobacteriaceae clinical isolates from São Paulo, Brazil

Abstract: OBJECTIVES The emergence of 16S rRNA methyltranferases (16 RMTAses) has jeopardised the clinical use of aminoglycosides. RmtB is one of the most frequently reported in Gram-negatives worldwide. In this study, we aimed to estimate the frequency of 16S RMTAses encoding genes in Enterobacteriaceae isolated in a three-month period from a tertiary Brazilian hospital. METHODS All Gram-negatives classified as resistant to amikacin, gentamicin, and tobramycin by agar screening were selected for analysis. The presence … Show more

“…The presence of five copies of qnrA1 was also reported in a previous study [45]. The presence of rmtB has been detected in Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, and P. mirabilis, and the prevalence of such resistance determinants has become concerning [46][47][48][49][50][51]. The rmtB gene may be located between the Tn2 transposon and insertion element [52,53].…”

“…AMEs and 16S rRNA methylase are the main causes of bacterial resistance to aminoglycoside antibiotics. Gram-negative bacteria containing rmtB also carry other enzymes that are responsible for different kinds of antibiotic resistance, such as β-lactamase [44]. In this study, the nucleotide sequences of rmtB adjacent to bla TEM in the pTJPa150 plasmid was 100% identical to that in pS95B2 in S. marcescens S-95, which was first identified as the rmtB-carrying strain [27].…”
