The aim of the study was to evaluate the distribution on hospital wards, the spectrum of infections and the pattern of antimicrobial resistance of Providencia strains identified between 01.01.2018-31.12.2020 in the samples of the patients hospitalized in the Clinical County Emergency Hospital of Brasov. 380 strains of Providencia species were identified in the medical and surgical wards, especially in ICU (76.84%), Internal medicine ward (5.79%) and General surgery (3.95%). More frequently, Providencia spp. were isolated from tracheobronchial secretions (35.79%), pus (22.89%) and urine (19.74%). The levels of antimicrobial resistance of Providencia strains were very high for all the tested antimicrobials.

Providencia stuartii is one of the Enterobacteriaceae species of medical importance commonly associated with urinary infections, which can also cause other ones, including uncommon ones, such as liver abscess and septic vasculitis.This bacterium stands out in the expression of intrinsic and acquired resistance to antimicrobials. Besides, it uses mechanisms such as biofi lm for its persistence in biotic and abiotic environments. This study investigated the cellular hydrophobicity profi le of clinical isolates of P. stuartii. It also analyzed genes related to the fi mbrial adhesin in this species comparing with other reports described for other bacteria from Enterobacteriaceae family. The investigated isolates to form biofi lm and had a practically hydrophilic cell surface profi le. However, fi mH and mrkD genes were not found in P. stuartii, unlike observed in other species of Enterobacteriaceae. These results show that P. stuartii has specifi cities regarding its potential for biofi lm formation, which makes it diffi cult to destabilize the infectious process and increases the permanence of this pathogen in hospital units.

The aac(6′)-Ib gene is the most widespread gene encoding aminoglycoside-modifying enzyme and conferring resistance to tobramycin, streptomycin and kanamycin. The variant aac(6′)-Ib-cr gene confers resistance to both aminoglycosides and fluoroquinolones (FQ). A total of 132 Campylobacter isolates, including 91 C. jejuni and 41 C. coli, were selected from broiler hens isolates. The aac(6′)-Ib gene was amplified using PCR and was subsequently digested with the BtsCI restriction enzyme to identify aac(6′)-Ib-cr. Among these isolates, 31 out of 41 C. coli (75.6%) and 1 (0.98%) C. jejuni were positive for the aac(6′)-Ib gene, which was identified as the aac(6′)-Ib-cr variant in 10 (32.25%) C. coli isolates. This variant was correlated with mutations in gyrA (Thr-86-Ile), as well as resistance to FQs. This study is the first report in Tunisia on Campylobacter coli strains harboring both the aac(6′)-Ib and aac(6′)-Ib-cr variants. These genes were present in Campylobacter isolates exhibiting resistance to multiple antibiotics, which restricts the range of available treatments.
