Abstract: Since its re-emergence in the late 1990s, there have been reports of Chikungunya fever (CHIK-F) presenting with severe or atypical findings. There is little knowledge regarding the clinical events leading to the death of patients with CHIK-F. This study aimed to systematically review the literature regarding CHIK-F and identify clinical features preceding death. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Lilacs, and IsiWeb for case-reports, case-series, or cohorts of CHIK-F reporting at least one death, up to Decembe… Show more

“…Some of these patients had to be taken off their medications for hypertension in order to prevent hypotensive crisis [ 47 ]. Death can be caused by any of these conditions, risk factors for which is older age and cardiac comorbidities such as hypertension and congestive heart failure [ 29 , 31 , 43 , 47 , 70 , 74 , 86 , 96 , 97 ]. Children usually do not have comorbidities; however, in one case there was an individual with a mutation of the SCN5A gene, which is linked to cardiac sinus node dysfunction [ 84 ].…”

“…Likely in part due to the large number of worldwide CHIKV infections, rare complications and unusual disease outcomes during CHIKF have been observed. For example, neurological disease may not be as rare as initially thought; encephalitis, myelitis, Guillain-Barré syndrome and ocular involvement including uveitis and retinitis have been reported [195][196][197]. Mother-to-fetus perinatal transmission was also observed [198].…”

“…A wide variety of chikungunya-associated neurological manifestations have been reported, such as encephalitis, myelopathy, peripheral neuropathy, myelitis, and meningoencephalitis [116][117][118][119]. Death from chikungunya disease is infrequent and results mainly due to existing health problems or severe clinical manifestation in the elderly, infants, or immunocompromised patients [120][121][122].…”
