“…The analysis of spatial distribution patterns indicated a higher concentration of cases and hospital admissions for schistosomiasis in areas along the coast of the states of Pernambuco, Alagoas, and Sergipe, corroborating other studies that revealed high morbidity and mortality rates due to the disease and the formation of clusters in these areas [30,[45][46][47][48]. Hospital admissions due to schistosomiasis result from the evolution of the disease, when there were failures in the identification of cases, timely treatment, and healthcare of the affected person [8].…”

“…In addition to promoting the maintenance of the parasite's transmission cycle, these conditions cause delays in the diagnosis and timely treatment of ill patients. As a result, there is a higher risk for the occurrence of severe clinical forms, as the chronic hepatosplenic form, and death [ 12 , 26 ].…”

“…Additionally, we observed a high number of infectious diseases as associated causes to schistosomiasis, mainly viral hepatitis, septicemia, and pneumonia. Prior studies have investigated the association between schistosomiasis and hepatitis caused by viruses B and C, especially in Egypt and Brazil [ 12 , 30 - 32 ]. The authors emphasize that the occurrence of both infections can further aggravate the patient's clinical condition, with a greater risk of liver fibrosis, portal hypertension, and the progression of hepatic fibrosis into cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, which considerably increases the risk of death [ 31 , 32 ].…”

“…Schistosoma mansoni is the species causing human schistosomiasis in Brazil. Schistosomiasis is endemic in 19 of the 27 states in Brazil with over 70% of cases from the Northeast region 2 . An estimated 1.5 million individuals were infected with S. mansoni and 42.9 million people were at high risk of infection 3 .…”
