Ectopic forms of schistosomiasis mansoni in the second macroregion of Alagoas: case series report and review of the literature

Abstract: Introduction: Ectopic forms of schistosomiasis are those in which the parasitic element is localized outside the portal system, the natural habitat of the helminth. Although the prevalence rates of schistosomiasis are high in Brazil, clinical and epidemiological data on ectopic forms of the disease are still scarce. Methods: Cross-sectional, retrospective and descriptive epidemiological study in which cases with a confirmed histopathological diagnosis of an ectopic form of schistosomiasis were analyzed. The ca… Show more

“…In contrast, previous studies in S. japonicum mice models demonstrated downregulation of circulatory miRNA-146b but upregulated hepatic expression (Cai et al 2013 ; He et al 2013 ). A possible explanation for this contradiction is that circulatory miRNAs are affected by expression in several tissues such as the intestine, spleen, kidney, and other ectopic sites, especially in schistosomiasis japonicum (Lima et al 2017 ; Cai et al 2018 ).…”

“…Although the eggs are transported through the intestinal wall to be eliminated with the fecal material for the continuity of the Schistosoma life cycle, a large proportion of them can stay trapped in the intestinal wall or even be directed to other organs—mainly, the liver [ 17 ]. Eggs from S. mansoni can also be ectopically located in the spleen [ 18 ], lungs [ 18 , 19 ], reproductive system [ 20 ], and central nervous system [ 21 , 22 ].…”

“…GED Gastroenterologia Endoscopia Digestiva, [S. l.], v. 30, n. 3, p. 103-109, 2011.symptoms, as well as provides information on transmitting snails and existing methods for their control, emphasizing the relevance of the use of plants with molluscicidal properties as an effective strategy to interrupt the evolutionary cycle of the S. mansoni parasite, thus contributing to the reduction of disease cases.KEYWORDS:Schistosomiasis mansoni; Epidemiology; Symptomatology; Control; , 2018).
