Abstract: What is the effect of social distancing policies on the spread of the new coronavirus? Social distancing policies rose to prominence as most capable of containing contagion and saving lives. Our purpose in this paper is to identify the causal effect of social distancing policies on the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 and on contagion velocity. We align our main argument with the existing scientific consensus: social distancing policies negatively affect the number of cases. To test this hypothesis, we co… Show more

“…There has been much debate on this issue worldwide, with already systematic reviews and metaanalyses trying to summarize the findings of multiple empirical research, and making explicit the economic, psychological and educational downside of this kind of policy (Busa et al, 2021;Krishnaratne et al, 2020). Several scholars in this research field explicitly design, look for, model, match or reconstruct some counterfactual against which to compare the cases of interest (e. g. Auger et al, 2020;Cunha et al, 2021;Gordon et al, 2021;Rauscher and Burns, 2021). Notably, with a few exceptions, these comparisons are not performed by political scientists and, apart from some economists, not even by the more comprehensive category of social scientists.…”

“…Although it is epidemiological in nature, its impact has extended beyond the health domain (Sotola, Pillay, & Gebreselassie, 2021). To prevent the spread of the virus, as a result of the thousands of confirmed cases worldwide, national and international health authorities have adopted a variety of strategies (Peci, Avellaneda, & Suzuki, 2021) and recommended the implementation of social distancing policies to contain the spread of the virus that causes the disease (Cunha, Domingos, Rocha, & Torres, 2021; Tabari, Amini, Moghadami, & Moosavi, 2020; World Health Organization, 2020).…”

“…Os países que se saíram melhor no controle, prevenção e cuidados foram aqueles que não ignoraram a gravidade da situação. As medidas de isolamento se confirmaram como medidas eficazes(CUNHA et al, 2021). Nesse momento, esses países já têm a crise mais controlada e tiveram baixas no número de óbitos e casos.…”
