Abstract: Objective: to explain the approaches and discussions about the Advance Healthcare Directives spread among health professionals, lawyers and society. Method: bibliographic search in the databases SciELO, LILACS, BDENF, in Portuguese, carried out from December 2017 to January 2018. “…Discussing end-of-life care is a significant challenge faced by health workers because one of the barriers that emerge and postpone discussions about care options is the fact that patients are prevented from taking part in the decision-making process (12)(13) .
