Abstract: The cerebral cortex folding in humans allow that an extensive area of cerebral cortex fit into the limited space of the skull. The factors that guide this folding are complex and its final result leads to sulci and gyrus patterns in adult brain. These patterns, depending on the region of cerebral cortex analyzed, can have or not a high degree of variability 1 . There are some evidence that factors guiding the cerebral cortex folding starts in the beginning of cerebral morphogenesis. First, in a coronal brain s… Show more

“…The 10 postmortem brains used for the cytoarchitectonic mapping and analysis were part of this sample. Previous studies (Ono et al, 1990;Chiavaras et al, 2001;Rodrigues et al, 2015) proposed three or four different sulcal patterns, which we applied. This resulted in a classification of four types of patterns of sulci and gyri in the 52 hemispheres.…”

“…The length of the TOS varied but was longer than in the X-subtype of the second pattern. Of the 52 analyzed FIGURE 10 | Four types of sulci and gyri patterns in the medial and lateral orbitofrontal region of the right hemisphere have been described according to Ono, Chiavaras and Rodrigues (Ono et al, 1990;Chiavaras and Petrides, 2000;Chiavaras et al, 2001;Rodrigues et al, 2015). Localization of the respective areas differed between the four types according to the sulcal arrangements.…”

“…During direct cortical observation, it is sometimes difficult to understand the cortical anatomy of the sulci and gyrus because of the arachnoid matter 6,7 . Further, anatomical variation often occurs in this region 8 .…”
