Abstract: Primary hemifacial spasm (HFS) is characterized by irregular and involuntary contraction of the muscles innervated by the ipsilateral facial nerve. Treatment controls symptoms and improves quality of life (QoL). Objective : Evaluate the initial diagnosis and treatment of HFS prior to referral to a tertiary center. Method : We interviewed through a standard questionnaire 66 patients currently followed in our center. Results : Mean age: 64.19±11.6 years, mean age of symptoms onset: 51.9±12.5 years, male/fem… Show more

“…In our study, the time to diagnosis was consistent with the literature (between 2.64 and 5.4 years). 11,12 The clinical presentation was typical, localized preferentially on the left side, in a young and female population. The typical evolution of HFS, 13 the selective nature of the impairment (few cochleovestibular symptoms), and the progressive BTI effectiveness exhaustion probably reflect the spatial organization of the facial fibers, as well as the selective nature of the compression exerted at the REZ's facial nerve.…”

“…La edad media de inicio del cuadro suele estar entorno a la 4ª-6ª década de la vida según la mayoría de las series. Existe además una diferencia de incidencia en cuanto a sexos, estando definida una predominancia del sexo femenino con una ratio de hasta 3:1 según la serie 3,4 . Casos familiares han sido descritos, aunque representan como mucho un 2%-3% en las series más amplias 1 .…”

“…Yet, such evidence is still little applied to those who need it most, patients 2 , as the diagnostic acumen of primary care practitioners, chiefly in neurology, has lagged behind 3,4,5 . These professionals who lack the basic skills of data collection and interpretation, differential diagnosis and diagnostic work-up place a heavy burden on already over-stretched health systems 6,7 .…”
