Abstract: Transsexual subjects are individuals who have a desire to live and be accepted as a member of the opposite sex, usually accompanied by a sense of discomfort with, or inappropriateness of, one's anatomic sex, and a wish to have surgery and hormonal treatment to make one's body as congruent as possible with one's preferred sex. “…The increase in LH and FSH levels has also been reported in transsexual patients treated with synthetic androgenic steroids. 48 In this study, the final body weight of animals was not influenced by the treatments. Previous studies have shown no effect of synthetic steroids on the final body weight of rats, corroborating with our results.…”

“…This hormonal profile is linked to oestrous acyclicity in rats, similar to that reported by Gervásio et al in which an excessively androgenic ovarian microenvironment (eg polycystic ovary syndrome — PCOS) may have a negative impact on follicular development; in addition to the androgenic status, LH hypersecretion found in PCOS results in chronic anovulation and infertility. The increase in LH and FSH levels has also been reported in transsexual patients treated with synthetic androgenic steroids …”

“…The quality of life of the trans population in developing countries is still precarious 45 because of the small number of specialized services that care for these individuals. Appropriate medical and psychological treatment is widely recognized 46 as being important to improve the quality of life of this population. Thus, our results provide important new knowledge about the psychological distress faced by transsexual individuals due to discrimination by their families and by society in general; this distress may lead to high rates of anxiety and depression and alarmingly high rates of attempted suicide.…”

“…However, there is still lack of evidence regarding the psychological effect of the long-term use of these hormones. 7 The transgender men, before starting treatment, must be informed about the limitations and possible side effects that might advent from the androgen administration, such as irreversible physical alterations and the risk of infertility, although the severity and reversibility of this last side effect are not yet completely clarified. 2 Some physical results may not be achieved, despite the dose of testosterone used; furthermore, the intentional use of supra physiologic doses of this hormone, greater than the male pattern, may lead to increased risk of complication.…”

“…2 Some physical results may not be achieved, despite the dose of testosterone used; furthermore, the intentional use of supra physiologic doses of this hormone, greater than the male pattern, may lead to increased risk of complication. 7 The best moment to start the androgenic therapy is usually defined in collective agreement between the transgender individual that aims to start the transsexualization process and the mental health team that assisted him, diagnosed the gender dysphoria condition and recommended his sexual reassignment. 5,6,8 Many different pharmacological formulations have been used by the health care services in the transsexualization process, including intramuscular testosterone esters in a short term or long-term release injection, undecanoate testosterone capsules, testosterone gel, patches or subcutaneous systems.…”
