Exercise is associated with better quality of life in patients on TSH-suppressive therapy with levothyroxine for differentiated thyroid carcinoma

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate if a supervised exercise training program improves the quality of life (QoL) of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) patients on TSH-suppressive therapy with levothyroxine (L-T 4 ). Subjects and methods: Initially, a cross-sectional study was performed to compare the QoL and the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) between subclinical hyperthyroidism (SCH) patients (n = 33) and euthyroid subjects (EU; n = 49). In the prospective phase of the study, SCH patients were randomized in a n… Show more

“…In patients with hypothyroidism due to treatment of thyroid cancer, fatigue seems to be associated with decreased physical activity [112]. Physical activity also partially alleviates the fatigue in patients with thyroid cancer [113, 114]. Given these considerations, it might be reasonable to consider a trial of standard of care LT4 versus LT4 and lifestyle changes, including exercise.…”

“…Current guidelines for the management of hypothyroidism recommend that LT4 remains the first-line treatment. Exercise appears to be an effective way of combating fatigue and improving the quality of life in this setting [21,23]. A similar benefit was observed in LT4-treated breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy [24].…”

“…Exercise seems to play an important role in DTC patients and to minimize the treatment effect on quality of life, said Patricia dos Santos Vigario et al [5] in a study published in 2013. The exercise program consisted of 60 minutes of aerobic and stretching exercises, twice a week during twelve weeks.…”
