This study evaluated the ability of Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma koningii to improve the quality of tea dregs (TDs) through solid-state fermentation as well as the value of the fermented tea dregs (FTDs) produced for use as bio-feed additives. After fermentation, FTDs differed in color and structure. Fermentation with A. niger and T. koningii increased the contents of crude protein, crude fiber, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber of TDs. Compared to the unfermented group, the contents of reducing sugar, total flavonoids, total polyphenols, and theasaponins were increased in A. niger FTDs, while in T. koningii FTDs caffeine was completely degraded, the theasaponins were lower, and the contents of reducing sugar and caffeine higher. Regarding free amino acids, A. niger FTDs had the highest content of total amino acids, total essential amino acids, total non-essential amino acids, total aromatic amino acids, total branched-chain amino acids, and total non-protein amino acids, and all types of essential amino acids, followed by T. koningii FTDs and the control TDs. Fungal fermentation had similar effects on the content of various hydrolytic amino acids as those on above free amino acids, and increased the content of bitter and umami components. The composition of essential amino acids of TDs or FTDs was similar to that of the standard model, except for sulfur-containing amino acids and isoleucine. Solid-state fermentation with A. niger and T. koningii effectively improved the nutritional value of TDs, increased the contents of functional substances, and improved the flavor of TDs. This study demonstrated a feasible approach to utilize TDs that not only increases animal feed resources, but also reduces the production of resource waste and pollution.

Nitrogen losses under different irrigation modes have been evaluated by many studies, yet it is not very clear whether the lost N sources are from the soil or fertilizer. In order to quantitatively investigate the effects of different irrigation modes on fertilizer N loss, we used the 15N-labeledurea (15N abundance of 19.6%) as fertilizer and the lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. angustana iris) as the plant material to conduct a field experiment under three different lower limits of drip irrigation, including 75% (DR1), 65% (DR2) and 55% (DR3), accounting for the field water capacity. A furrow irrigation treatment (FI) with the same irrigation regime as DR2 was used as the control. The fate and balance of 15N under these treatments were studied. The results showed that, after the lettuce harvest, 36.9–48.8% of the applied fertilizer 15N remained in 0–80-cm soil, 32.6–39.4% was absorbed by plants, and 18.6–26.3% was lost via pathways such as volatilization or leaching. Under the same irrigation regime, 15N loss caused by FI (26.3%) was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than that byDR2 (18.9%). Moreover, FI increased the amount of total 15N, mineral 15N and organic 15N in the deeper soil layers (60 cm depth and below), leading to a potential risk of 15N leaching. The soil 15N residue was relatively lower under DR1, while the crop-absorbed15Nor15N loss was atthe highest level among the three drip irrigation treatments. The correlation analysis results showed that increasing the total irrigation amount or increasing the irrigation frequency might increase the15N loss. We concluded that using drip irrigation instead of furrow irrigation with controlling the lower irrigation limit at 65% is conducive to improving crop 15N utilization and reducing 15N loss from lettuce fields.

The study presents the results of a 3-year field trial aimed at assessing the yield and efficiency indicators of nitrogen application in the cultivation of three maize cultivars differing in agronomic and genetic profile. The advantages of the UltraGrain stabilo formulation (NBPT and NPPT) over ammonium nitrate and urea are apparent if a maize cultivar capable of efficient nutrient uptake in the pre-flowering period and effective utilization during the grain filling stage is selected. Therefore, the rational fertilization of maize with urea-based nitrogen fertilizer with a urease inhibitor requires the simultaneous selection of cultivars that are physiologically profiled for efficient nitrogen utilization from this form of fertilizer (“stay-green” cultivar). The interaction of a selective cultivar with a high genetically targeted potential for nitrogen uptake from soil, combined with a targeted selection of nitrogen fertilizer, is important not only in terms of production, but also environmental and economic purposes.
