Abstract: Liver fibrosis is the final common pathway of chronic liver diseases, having cirrhosis as a possible progression, which has liver transplantation as the only effective treatment. Human amniotic membrane represents a potential strategy as a therapy for liver fibrosis, due to its anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic and immunomodulatory properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate amniotic membrane effects as a treatment for hepatic fibrosis induced in rats by bile duct ligation (BDL), verifying alterations betw… Show more

“…In a rat model of cirrhosis generated by bile duct ligation, the fibrosis process was generated 2 weeks later. Fresh AM was placed on the hepatic surface totally or partially and, 4 weeks later, a decrease in the severity of fibrosis was histologically verified, due to a decrease in the amount of collagen deposits ( Sant'Anna et al, 2011 ; Ricci et al, 2013 ; Mamede and Sant’anna, 2019 ). In post-operative pancreatic fistula after pancreatic resection, cryopreserved AM was applied with the aim of tissue regeneration and preventing fluid leakage at many surgical sites ( Figure 4 ).…”

“…There are many types of liver disease, accounting for a high burden of global diseases [ 1 ]. Liver diseases are currently a challenging issue for global public health, considering their high incidence rates, prevalence, and serious morbidities [ 2 ]. During the past several years, an increasing trend in hospitalization for chronic liver diseases has been described, particularly for end-stage cirrhosis and fatty liver disease [ 3 ].…”
