Abstract: The first cases of Zika virus infection in Colombia were reported and confirmed in October 2015. The objective of the study was estimate the seroprevalence of ZIKV infection during the preepidemic phase in Barranquilla, Colombia, and demonstrate the presence of virus before the Colombian Ministry of Health confirmed the first case. We conducted a descriptive study of the seroprevalence of Zika virus in 390 samples obtained from a blood bank located in Barranquilla, Colombia-a city endemic for dengue, and with … Show more

“…In Colombia, another South American country, the prevalence of ZIKV was on the order of 2.62% among blood donors in the period from 2015 to 2016 [ 31 ]. The fact that we did not find cases in our study reinforces that since 2018, clinical screening and population awareness have probably allowed this prevalence to decrease among blood-bank donors [ 32 ].…”

“…Samples from local blood banks before the date were tested to estimate the presence of the virus in Colombia. Researchers found samples from June to July 2015 contained antibodies against Zika virus and the seroprevalence grown over time ( Bayona-Pacheco et al, 2019 ), which suggesting that the occurrence of the virus were much earlier than reported.…”
