Colored shade nets induced changes in growth, anatomy and essential oil of Pogostemon cablin

Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of colored shade nets on the growth, anatomy and essential oil content, yield and chemical composition of Pogostemon cablin. The plants were cultivated under full sunlight, black, blue and red nets. The harvesting was performed 5 months after planting and it was followed by the analysis of plant growth parameters, leaf anatomy, essential oil content, yield and chemical composition. The plants grown under red net have produced more leaf, shoot, to… Show more

“…These authors found that Melissa officinalis L. plants, at 120 d after transplanting, showed a greater SLM when cultivated under full sun. For LAR, Ribeiro et al (2018) found higher values in Pogostemon cablin cultivated under shaded conditions. The increase in SLA under this condition indicated the adaptive ability of leaf tissues in optimizing light capture (Guzmán et al, 2016;Liu et al, 2016) because it promotes CO 2 assimilation and stomatal control (Gommers et al, 2013).…”

“…This result reflects an increase in the volume of mesophyll per leaf area, which may favour the structural photosynthetic mechanism. This mechanism increases the diffusion of CO2 in the intercellular space, facilitates the CO2 diffusion by the rubisco enzyme (ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase), and regulates light intensity, consequently protecting the photosynthetic apparatus and improving its efficiency (Terashima et al, 2006;Valladares et al, 2012;Ribeiro et al, 2018).…”
