Potentially mobile of heavy metals on the surface sediments in tropical hyper-saline and positive estuaries

Abstract: Estuarine sediments represent important pools of trace metals, released from both anthropogenic and natural sources. Fluctuations in the water column physicochemical conditions, on the other hand, may transfer metals from solid to liquid compartment and resulting in contamination of the surrounding environment. The present research was carried out to evaluate the weakly bounded heavy metal levels in tropical hypersaline and positive estuaries, in order to quantify its potentially availability. The monitoring i… Show more

“…Several earlier studies mentioned the sequential extraction of hydrocarbons, petroleum, and organic fractions from sedimentary rocks employing multi‐stage consequent recovery. [ 122–124 ] The origin and formation of conventional oil/gas reservoirs are generally different from the oil and other organic matter that can be recovered from source rocks, which are naturally trapped within the kerogen and solid matrix. On the other hand, oil in the reservoir system can be found free within matrix pores of the well.…”

“…It has a negative effect on the aquatic environment, the presence of pollutants in the water column, and these contaminations, in extreme concentrations, are considered a limitation in the supply chain and transmission of contamination (Nkwoji et al 2020), in addition to affecting the biota population of the area . According to the source of contamination, pollutants, like heavy metals, are rapidly absorbed by suspended particles in the water column and stored hydro dynamically in water with fine particles of sediment (Al-Saad et al 2016;Silva et al 2017). Creeks are a specific shelter for the massive storage of contaminating materials (Vaalgamaa 2004).…”
