Insect Galls of the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia (Southeast Region, Brazil)

Abstract: The Parque Nacional do Itatiaia (PNI) (Brazilian Southeast Region) was surveyed monthly for insect galls from February/2014 to December/ 2015. A total of 432 gall morphotypes were found. This number places the PNI as the richest Atlantic forest area in number of gall morphotypes. The galls were found on 47 plant families. Among them, Asteraceae were pointed out as the superhost. The gall richness in the lower part of the PNI is higher than that of the plateau. The insect galls were found in 154 native, 56 ende… Show more

“…According to Isaias et al (2013), the high frequency of these shapes is related to the patterns of cell growth and differentiation of these plant organs. Most galls were glabrous, as in all other Brazilian inventories (Maia & Mascarenhas 2017). According to Inbar et al 2010, trichomes can act as structural defenses against loss of water or against predators and parasitoids, as they impair their feeding and mobility.…”

“…One hundred and fifty-three gall morphotypes were found in REBIO União. Only two previous Brazilian inventories have been performed in areas of Ombrophilous Forest, the first in Santa Teresa, Espírito Santo , and the second in Parque Nacional de Itatiaia (PNI), Southeast Brazil (Maia & Mascarenhas 2017). The authors recorded 265 and 406 gall morphotypes in these areas, respectively.…”

“…In none of these the inducer was identified at a specific level, one gall was mite-induced (Eriophyidae) and five by the orders Diptera, Hemiptera and Thysanoptera. In Niphidium crassifolium, Houard (1933) found that the inducer is a Coccidae (Hemiptera); Maia & Mascarenhas (2017) also recorded globoid gall morphotype on the adaxial side of the leaves of this fern (Figues. 1 E-F).…”
