Abstract: This study focuses on the effects of different thinning regimes on clonal Eucalyptus plantations growth. Four different trials, planted in 1999 and located in Bahia and Espírito Santo States, were used. Aside from thinning, initial planting density, and post thinning fertilization application were also evaluated. Before canopy closure, and therefore before excessive competition between trees took place, it was found that stands planted under low densities (667 trees per hectare) presented a lower mortality pro… Show more

“…However, the use of the developed models showed that stands with site indexes of 20 m and 30 m, thinned with an intensity of 33% at the age of 6 and 9 years, allowed increased basal area production between 10% and 11% and increased quadratic mean diameter between 36% and 40% compared to unthinned stands. Similar results were reported by Ferraz, Mola-Yudego, González-Olabarria, and Scolforo (2018) for Eucalyptus plantations in Brazil, where thinning regimes applied after 5.5 years, leaving a large number of residual trees, presented the highest production values in basal area.…”

“…Studies found that different spacing have a great influence on Cauliflower production [ 6 ]. Reduce the current-year and one-year-old conifers density can decline δ18O, increase δ13C and the net photosynthetic rate, the dry matter distribution was greatly affected by the row spacing and trees planted at low density had lower mortality than those planted at high density before the crown closed [ 7 , 8 ]. In addition, forests with moderate decrease density are more conducive to carbon sequestration than those without thinning accelerating and large-scale reduced forest density can improve resilience of forest, water and maintain ecological balance [ 9 11 ].…”

“…Also, part of this growth difference may be related to the different silvicultural treatments applied to the stands, such as: thinned versus unthinned. For example, Ferraz Filho et al (2018) found significant differences in the dominant height of thinned versus unthinned stands of Eucalyptus, although this is not the usual trend in forest stands.…”
