Phenolic compounds and anticancer activity of commercial sugarcane cultivated in Brazil

Abstract: The cultivation of sugarcane hybrids (X Saccharum officinarum L.) is an important revenue source for the Brazilian economy. Herein it is reported the evaluation of the cytotoxic activity of mid-polarity sugarcane extracts against human cancer cell lines, as well as the isolation of steroids sitosterol, stigmasterol and campesterol, phenolic acids p-hydroxybenzoic, p-hydroxycinnamic, vanillic and ferulic acid, terpenoids α-tocopherol and β-carotene and a novel substance in sugarcane, the flavonoid aglycone tric… Show more

“…The most abundant flavonoid compounds in S. officinarum are flavones (i.e., naringenin, apigenin, tricin and luteolin). These compounds the colour of sugarcane juice in addition to its health benefits due to their high antioxidant potential and capacity to protect cells from degenerative diseases [26]. Luteolin was identified in the low-field region from its characteristic signal at δ H 6.73 ppm (d, J = 2.3 Hz assigned to H-6) and another proton doublet at δ H 6.75 ppm ( J = 2.3 Hz assigned to H-8).…”

“…VA is widely used in the food industry as flavouring agent, food additive, and preservative. We detected VA in various foods, such as herbs, tea, coffee, wine, and beer [2][3][4][5][6][7]. VA possesses powerful antioxidant functions, antihypotensive effects, cardioprotective effects, hepatoprotective effects, and antiapoptotic activities [8][9][10][11].…”

“…Grasses hold a lot of syntheses as about 27 have been partly listed from the main cereals (sorghum, oat, barley, wheat, maize, Spelt). These chemicals and biologicals act as anticancer [37,66], increasing milk production [67], antifungal, antibacterial [37], anthelmintic, anti-amoebic, cyclooxygenase (COX) I and II inhibitory activity [68], dysmenorrheal and uterine relaxing activities.…”
