Abstract: This work aimed to determine the efficacy of the essential oil of A. gratissima as anesthetic for silver catfish, and to perform the bio-guided fractionation of essential oil aiming to isolate compounds responsible for the noted effects. Fish were submitted to anesthesia bath with essential oil, its fractions and isolated compounds to determine time of anesthetic induction and recovery. Eugenol (50 mg L -1 ) was used as positive control.Essential oil of A. gratissima was effective as an anesthetic at concentra… Show more

“…The intensity of its action cannot be directly compared, because it depends not only on the ratio between these two isomers, but may also be influenced by the minor components of EOAT (Benovit et al . ). In addition, its effectiveness may vary according to the fish species (King, Hooper, Hillsgrove, Benton & Berlinsky ).…”

“…The functional properties of essential oils are often assigned to their major constituents (Benovit, Silva, Salbego, Loro, Mallmann, Baldisserotto, Flores & Heinzmann ). Citral is a monoterpene formed by mixing isomers of geranial and neral (Nunes, Veloso, Pereira & Andrade ), which were the two most abundant components of the EOAT in this study.…”

“…Therefore, it seems that there are specific concentration ranges of EOL and EUG that are effective in altering AChE activity. The activity of this enzyme was lower in rat brain anesthetized with ketamine (Mazzanti et al, 1986) and in hippocampus and midbrain of guinea pigs after anesthesia with halothane (Lintern et al, 2000), but did not change in brain and muscle of silver catfish anesthetized with the essential oil of Aloysia gratissima (Benovit et al, 2015).…”

“…Although pharmacological activities observed for EO can be determined by their major components, they are often derived from complex interactions between different substances involving additive, synergistic, potentiation and or even antagonic effects (Efferth, Koch, 2011;Benovit et al, 2015). Despite the difference in induction and recovery times between the EOs, both natural products triggered anesthetic action, which may be correlated to the presence of specific chemical compounds.…”
