Characterization of granite and limestone powders for use as fillers in bituminous mastics dosage

Abstract: This paper discusses the importance of studies on materials known as fillers from different mineral origins, used in asphalt mixes, specifically in the formulation of mastics. The research was carried out on samples of limestone and granite rock filler and asphalt binder (50/70). The samples were evaluated through semiquantitative chemical analyses by X-ray fluorescence, granulometry by low angle laser emission, scanning electron microscopy, softening point tests, penetration tests, and aggregate-asphalt binde… Show more

“…Em relação as densidades, obteve-se dados próximos aos encontrados por Barra et al (2014). Para West e James ( 2006) os materiais de carga com densidade específica mais baixa ocupam maiores volumes na mistura e podem deixar menos vazios para acomodar o betume, o que pode promover a redução do consumo de ligante pela mistura.…”

“…It is evident from SEM that the LSP particles are rhombohedral in nature with sharp indents having rough superficial textures and apparently seem porous. ese characteristics contribute in developing good bond among grains of cementitious matrix [37,38].…”

“…e filler present in the asphalt mix combines with asphalt binder to form asphalt mastic. e filler activity in the mastic is due to the physical hardening and chemical interaction [5]. Based on this activity, the fillers can be generally classified into two categories known as active fillers and passive (inert) fillers.…”

“…Based on this activity, the fillers can be generally classified into two categories known as active fillers and passive (inert) fillers. e fillers which exhibit chemical activity in the mastic due to their alkaline nature and acidic nature of binder are termed as active fillers [5][6][7]. is chemical reaction is reported to improve the anti-aging potential, adhesion, and high temperature resistance in asphalt mastic and mixes [7,8].…”
