“…In this report, symptoms typical of cocaine withdrawal, including dysphoria, lethargy, poor concentration, sexual disinterest, and alterations in sleep and appetite, 27 which overlap with many of the symptoms measured by the BDI, were not differentially effected by bupropion over placebo. The failure of bupropion to reduce depressive symptoms among cocaine users in this study, given its proven effectiveness in treating depression, 38 suggest that these symptoms are more likely due to withdrawal from cocaine than from underlying depression and may require specific pharmacologic treatment. It is possible that the sample size in this study was insufficient to detect medication effects over placebo.…”

“…Alterations in sexuality as a result of psychotropic medication, particularly hypoactive sexual disorders, are well documented (Ashton & Rosen, 1998;Gregorian et al, 2002;Nieuwstraten & Dolovich, 2002;Rosen, Lane, & Menza, 1999;Zajecka, 2002). Gregorian et al (2002) completed a systematic review of the literature on antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction and concluded that sexual dysfunction is a common adverse effect of antidepressant pharmacotherapy.…”

“…There are reports that buproprion (Wellbutrin, Zyban) reduces the hypoactive sexual disorders seen with the use of antidepressants and is recommended for those patients who need antidepressant medication but experience hypoactive sexual symptoms (Ashton & Rosen, 1998;Nieuwstraten & Dolovich, 2002). In addition, recent reports from the literature indicate that buproprion may be beneficial for women and men experiencing hypoactive sexual disorders without concomitant depression or use of anti depressant medication (Modell, May, & Katholi, 2000;Segraves, 2003).…”

“…The management of these undesired side effects is difficult and has ranged from substitution of the primary therapeutic to agents that have apparently lowered incidence of sexual effects, such as the noradrenaline uptake inhibitors bupropion [33][34][35] or reboxetine [36], or to co-administration of agents that can directly reverse these effects, such as sildenafil or tadalafil [37][38][39]. These reports all underscore the limitations of our understanding of the full effects of the current antidepressant medications and the mechanisms through which they act.…”
