Spatiotemporal ecology of two Neotropical herbivorous mammals

Abstract: On this study, we used camera traps in a Semi deciduous Seasonal Forest, northeast of Brazil, to estimate the frequencies of occurrence of two Neotropical herbivorous mammals: the spotted paca (Cuniculus paca) and the tapeti (Sylvilagus brasiliensis), analyzing their seasonal variations of spatial distribution. We also characterized the activity pattern of the species and their seasonal variation. The herbivorous frequencies of occurrence were constant during all the seasons. In general, both species were most… Show more

“…This slight difference might have been to overlap their activity to the one of their potential preys. For example, pacas were also more crepuscular during the dry season (Dias, Oliveira Souza-Almeida et al, 2019), and in CBR agoutis during the dry season had crepuscular activity peaks (Borges-Zapata et al, 2020). The non-significant differences of ocelots' activity between seasons could be because, in the last years of this study, rainfall in CBR has been delayed and unevenly distributed throughout the year (Mardero et al, 2020), and some waterholes have stayed completely dry even in the wet season.…”

“…In Goiás state, only S. minensis is expected to occur (Bonvicino et al 2015;Ruedas et al 2017). In general, Brazilian cottontail rabbits are considered common, with a wide distribution and preference for edges of forest habitats, although they are also recorded in open environments, bamboo forests and disturbed areas (Emmons & Feer 1997;Silva Júnior et al 2005;Borges et al 2014;Dias et al 2019). Sylvilagus minensis was one of the most common medium-large mammal species recorded in fragmented areas of the southwestern region of the state (Gomes et al 2015;Rocha et al 2018), being associated with forest environments (Gomes et al 2015).…”
