Abstract: Wistar rats were randomly divided into groups of varying iodide intake: normal iodide; 10 times high iodide; and 100 times high iodide on Days 7, 14, and 28. Insignificant changes were observed in thyroid hormone levels (p > 0.05). Urinary iodine concentration and iodine content in the thyroid glands increased after high consumption of iodide from NI to 100 HI (p < 0.05). The urinary iodine concentration of the 100 HI group on Days 7, 14, and 28 was 60–80 times that of the NI group. The mitochondrial superoxid… Show more

“…Several genes are already well-characterized Nrf2 targets (e.g., Nqo1 , Gpx2 ), while others require further characterization. Last but not least, iodide exposure also activated Nrf2 signaling per se, as was evident by the upregulation of Nrf2 target genes ( Figure 6 B), in accordance with our previous in vitro and in vivo experiments [ 2 ] and the findings of others [ 9 ].…”

“…In the absence of Nrf2, this inflammation–autoimmunity–fibrosis transcriptional program was accentuated ( Figure 5 , Figure 6 and Figure 7 ). Given that the Nrf2 pathway was activated in response to excess iodide [ 2 , 9 ] ( Figure 6 B), enhanced Nrf2 signaling is central to the thyroid’s defense program aiming to keep ROS and inflammation at bay.…”

“…It has been demonstrated that the Keap-1/Nrf2 antioxidant defense system is an important cyto-protective mechanism against the oxidative stress associated with increased ROS and decreased antioxidant levels ( 42 ). Therefore, it was speculated that the Keap-1/Nrf2 antioxidant system may participate in the antioxidative stress processes of RSV in obese-asthmatic rat models.…”

“…Recent studies found that excess iodide could increase Nrf2 expression in rat thyroid ( Wang et al 2017 ) and activate the Nrf2 pathway in human skin cells ( Ben-Yehuda Greenwald et al 2017 ). Therefore, it is a conserved mechanism that the BLI-3 / TSP-15 / DOXA-1 dual oxidase complex and the Nrf2/ SKN-1 pathway are both involved in the response to oxidative stress induced by excess iodide.…”
