Despite advising on thousands of important decisions, who serves on presidential transition teams in the United States is largely unknown. The secretive and transient nature of transition planning explains why this is the case, but also reinforces why it is important to have a better understanding of who a president‐elect might choose at this critical moment of the transfer of power. This article develops a theory of the transition team as well as a typology based on two factors: expertise and status. Original interviews with members of the 2020–2021 Biden–Harris transition team then demonstrate the utility of this typology for better understanding the transition period.

In recent years, there has been a broad theoretical debate on a concept of democracy which is ideal for governments that correspond to the expectations of citizens. It is also possible to observe that in the present, the traditional political alternatives have demonstrated a progressive downfall, which has given way to parties or political figures that challenge the established system. In this chapter, the emblematic cases of Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and the United States are presented, with special emphasis on the electoral processes held in those countries between 2016 and 2018, in where candidates who promised to change the state of affairs in their respective countries had a positive electoral outcome. These cases exemplify, on the one hand, institutionalism in some of the continent's most important countries, in where the transfer of power occurs peacefully and through supervised electoral processes. But for the other, it is also evidence of the exhaustion of the traditional political class and the rise of new actors, who take advantage of the new channels of representation. This is showing both a crisis of Western democracies and the transformation of the electoral machineries.

En el presente artículo realizaremos un recuento de los acontecimientos más importantes que permitieron consolidar la percepción en torno a los medios digitales como una nueva modalidad de implicación cívica. Señalaremos una diferenciación de tres etapas en las que se consolidó la ciberpolítica: la primera de ellas, fue el potencial democratizador que inicia en 2008 con la campaña política de Obama, la Primavera Árabe y movimientos cívico-digitales en España, Chile y México. La segunda etapa fue aquella en la que se normalizan estas herramientas dentro de la competencia política y comunicación institucional, que transita del 2013 al 2018, año en que se celebran procesos electorales inéditos en Gran Bretaña y Estados Unidos. A partir de 2019, se inicia una tercera etapa en la que surgen nuevas interrogantes en torno al rol de los medios sociales en la consolidación de la democracia en distintas regiones del mundo.
