Abstract: Long-term preservation of recalcitrant seeds is very difficult because the physiological basis on their desiccation sensitivity is poorly understood. Survival of Antiaris toxicaria axes rapidly decreased and that of immature maize embryos very slowly decreased with dehydration. To understand their different responses to dehydration, we examined the changes in mitochondria activity during dehydration. Although activities of cytochrome (Cyt) c oxidase and malate dehydrogenase of the A. toxicaria axis and maize e… Show more

“…However, the maximal capacity of the non-phosphorylating AOX pathway, which is CN-resistant and sensitive to SHAM, significantly increased (Table 1) as well as the RR. Although the nature of the RR remains unclear, it was shown that it may be considerable under abiotic stresses including plant dehydration (Shugaeva et al 2007, Song et al 2009. As expected, the RC value sharply dropped providing evidence for the disruption of the mechanism underlying the regulation of mitochondrial respiration by the adenylate cell system (Fig.…”

“…Following drying of germinating maize seeds, impairment of mitochondrial electron transport chain was marked in the NADH dehydrogenase of NADH-coenzyme Q reductase (complex I) and NADH-cytochrome c reductase (complex IV) and the alternative oxidase (Leprince et al, 1993a;reviewed by Côme and Corbineau, 1996;Leprince and Hoekstra, 1998;Song et al, 2009). In the present investigation, the level of NAD was surprisingly enhanced during drying.…”

“…The activities of PFK and MDH were reported to be adversely affected by desiccation (Leprince et al, 1993a;reviewed by Côme and Corbineau, 1996;Song et al, 2009;Ntuli et al, 2011). PFK activity decreased upon rapid drying but was stimulated during slow dehydration.…”

“…Its fruits are either orange or dark red indehiscent drupes covered with velvety hairs. The seeds are broad, approximately 10 mm long, and are recalcitrant, showing sensitivity to either desiccation or chilling during germination [20], [21], [22]. NO has been previously reported to promote seed germination and reduce seed dormancy in Arabidopsis and grass seeds [20], [21], [23], [24].…”
