Abstract: Recovery of AChE activity in the motor end plate region and end plate free region of the rat diaphragm was studied after irreversible inhibition by soman. Recovery was slow during the first 2 days and only 4 S and 10 S molecular forms of AChE were present in the end plate region. However, cytochemical evidence indicates that synaptic AChE has already started to accumulate and that the synthesis of AChE in muscle and Schwann cell might even be enhanced. Tubular structures, observed underneath the motor end plat… Show more

“…Complete restoration of aged erythrocyte AChE takes several months (Namba et al, 1971) whereas restoration of synaptic AChE proceeds faster (Grubić et al, 1981). Consequently, determination of erythrocyte AChE activity will not reflect the end of cholinergic crisis in artificially ventilated patients (Thiermann et al, 2007).…”

“…The de novo AChE synthesis importantly contributes to the recovery of AChE activity after OP poisoning (Grubic et al, 1981). Thus, we explored recovery of AChE mRNA and activity after gene silencing of AChE or DFP exposure.…”

“…Consequently, RBC-AChE should have comparable functional properties to synaptic AChE and therefore may be used as surrogate parameter, reflecting the AChE status at the synaptic site. However, when RBC-AChE ages completely, restoration takes several months (42) while synaptic AChE recovers faster (43,44). Therefore, under these conditions, RBC-AChE can no longer be regarded as a suitable parameter to indicate the end of the cholinergic crisis.…”
